David’s unique executive history in philanthropy, state government, and private business honed an adaptability to understand and work with the diversity of backgrounds and perspectives of an organization’s board members, staff, and shareholders. He uses that important skill to craft creative questions combined with insightful listening to help a team clarify goals, expectations, accountability,
and outcomes.

After a lifetime of reporting to or serving on non-profit boards, he especially enjoys working with board members and staff to discover their common cause and strategies centered around their passionate mission. His process generates positive excitement and energy from which David helps sharpen organizational direction for maximum success and resiliency during a time of executive transition.

During his 35-year career, David has led organizations working through various life cycle stages including startup, political transition, fast growth, merger, and turnaround. He has led staff sizes of 2-80, managed budgets from $1M – $20M, and developed human service, loan portfolio, business development, civic engagement, and volunteer programs. His specific skills include financial analysis, developing financial practices and protocols, staff mentoring and development, board governance, and building external strategic partnerships.

David is open to residing in the area of his nonprofit interim clients, as he did in his role as Interim Executive Director for the Preservation Society of Charleston, SC.
